Aho Ssan present Rhizomes (Live)

He/him — France
Friday 20 May — Muziekgebouw w/ The Rest Is Noise

The Parisian Aho Ssan presents the Dutch premiere of Rhizomes; a live performance of a new album based on the Rhizomes concept by the philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. It is a self-developed model that is always in flux and will expand in all directions. A complex system without beginning and end, but always a middle. The album – and the associated performance – borrow the same concept. Aho Ssan collects and uses various sound materials, from artists such as Angel Bat Dawid, Nicolas Jaar or Moor Mother, to create a musical rhizome.

Aho Ssan, designer and filmmaker Désiré Niamké, was born in the suburbs of Paris and as a boy was confronted with discrimination and structural racism early on. In his contemporary work he investigates the question: what is 'reality' and who determines it? His debut album Simulacrum is inspired by the influential text "Simulacres et Simulation" by the French sociologist Jean Baudrillard. In addition to critically reflecting on facades of inclusivity and equality, Aho Ssan plays directly with sonic simulations of jazz musicians. Working from the tradition of Sun Ra and Afrofuturism, Aho Ssan developed a virtual jazz ensemble using software to perform with it.

This performance is presented in collaboration with The Rest Is Noise at Muziekgebouw on May 20th. You’ll need a separate ticket for this programme.
