Kumbirai Makumbe (Talk - remote)
She/they — UK
Part of Session #5: Queer Ecologies and In-Betweenness (with Nicolas Baird)
Sunday 19 June | 14:00 - 15:40
Location: Likeminds
Kumbirai Makumbe is a London-based artist who believes in the transmutation of the intangible yet experiential. They place significant effort into the speculative exploration of alternative modes of being and thinking that offers means to negate exclusionary acts and ideologies. Kumbirai’s work addresses the multi-dimensionality of blackness, notions of inclusion, in-betweenness, care and transcendence.
In response to the theme of mutation, Kumbirai Makumbe will talk about the role of transformation in their work, and how 'prototypes' or mutants can perform new ways of being. They will elaborate on their ongoing research on 'in-betweenness', in terms of gender, translocational belonging, and a constantly changing landscape of identities. How to navigate 'in-betweenness' and how to take ownership of it?
