Nicolas Baird / Institute of Queer Ecology (Talk)
He/him - US
Part of Session #5: Queer Ecologies and In-Betweenness (with Kumbirai Makumbe)
Sunday 19 June | 14:00 - 15:40
Location: Likeminds
Guided by queer and feminist theory and decolonial thinking, the Institute of Queer Ecology (IQECO) works to undo dangerously destructive human-centric hierarchies—or even flip them—to look at the critical importance of things happening invisibly; underground and out of sight. With interdisciplinary programming that oscillates between curating exhibitions and directly producing artworks/projects, IQECO enacts utopia with the goal of building a future that prioritizes a (bio)diverse world.
In this panel, the Institute of Queer Ecology will share how recent research has led to their focus on mutability and mutualism as foundational themes of Queer Ecology and discuss how these themes can be embodied as transformative strategies for individual and planetary adaptation. Speaking on behalf of the institute isco-director Nicolas Baird, an artist, evolutionary biologist, writer, and dancer. He holds a BA Science & Society / BA Visual Arts from Brown University and an MSc in Taxonomy & Biodiversity from Imperial College and the Natural History Museum, London. The art practice and scientific research of Nicolas Baird is concerned with the evolutionary relationships between bodies and their landscapes, transmutation, and multispecies coadaptation.
