Part of Session #4: Postcapitalist Design
Sunday 19 June | 11:00 - 12:40
Location: Likeminds
Selçuk Balamir is a designer, educator and organizer, working at the intersections of creative production, radical politics and ecological transition. Selçuk was born in Ankara, studied in Strasbourg, and currently resides in Amsterdam. He currently teaches eco-social design at WdKA Rotterdam and is the 2022 Artist in Residence at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture. His PhD in Cultural Analysis at UvA is on commoning practices in postcapitalist design. Some of the projects he co-developed are Climate Games, a transmedia event enabling peer-to-peer disobedience, and Shell Must Fall, a grassroots campaign targeting shareholder meetings. He co-initiated the housing projects NieuwLand, a postcapitalist urban commune, and de Nieuwe Meent, a cooperative based on commoning.
At FIBER, Selçuk Balamir will discuss the project TikTok Climate Propaganda, part of the current New Earth programme at the WdKA. How can artists, designers and cultural workers contribute to repairing and regenerating an unjust, damaged, but not yet broken planet? That is the pivotal question to this zeitgeisty project.
