Kaleidoscopic zoning through mountainous moments.

Musician upsammy and visual artist Sjoerd Martens created a new A/V work, meandering through various digital and analog interactions forming a natural growing body and landscape at the same time. By exploring the rhythmical and vibrational qualities of image and sound in its original environment they discover certain fertility within their working methods. Microsound and micro-texture are lifted to the foreground and obtain personality, natural color is attributed to otherworldly qualities and sonic artifacts are shattered around the organic terrain. A fluid terrain painted to reality but colored strongly according to an inner world coping with an outer one.

(Re)constructs the ever-changing living environment, using source materials shot with his phone. Through multidisciplinary and atypical narrative techniques inspired by abandoned childhood dreams, he sculpts the intangible human presence into a digital mise-en-scène and immortalizes uncertain moments in time. Little intricate bouquets shift the contrast between the natural and artificial objects and spaces, feeling utopian and dystopian at the same time. Exhibited in Aruba to Japan, at i.a. Marina Abramović Institute, Les Rencontres de la photographie Arles, and La Biennale di Venezia.

With a keen ear for crystalline melody and intricate rhythm, Thessa Torsing a.k.a. upsammy’s music takes cues from electro and IDM, a breathing space that slides across tempo scales while retaining an organic touch as a gentle hum of nature digitized. She consolidated a firm position in the contemporary leftfield music world, which includes a residency at De School and invitations to pinnacle venues such as Panorama Bar and Robert Johnson. Her gift for full-length composition is showcased through her albums on home ground Nous’klaer Audio (Wild Chamber, 2019) and Dekmantel (Zoom, 2020).
