Part of Session #1: Energy Electricity (with Adam Bobbette)
Saturday 18 June | 11:00 - 12:40
Location: Likeminds
Vibeke Mascini is a visual artist, writer, and amateur moth breeder based in Amsterdam. She has studied at Gerrit Rietveld Academy and is currently an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam (2021-2023). Vibeke works as a sculpture tutor and research fellow at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.
Through sculptures, installations, video and text Vibeke explores the scaling of abstract phenomena into a sensorial scope, with the intention to seek agency from intimacy. In long-term collaboration with scientists, engineers, government employees and musicians she reroutes existing systems and proposes a conscious understanding of electric energy as a statement of interconnectedness and entanglement—between species, media and nature, matter and energy.
In her talk she will discuss our intimate relation with electricity, and her ongoing research on improbable sources like stranded whale bodies from which electricity is derived through destruction processes. Her current project Lethe deals with the destruction of a landscape: the melting of a glacier in the Swiss mountains under the increasing influences of global warming. What do we consider as fuel in our societies? And how to foster energy literacy?
