Andrius Arutiunian (Talk)
He/him — AM/LT
Part of Session #2: Other Frequencies (with Colette Aliman)
Saturday 18 June | 14:00 - 15:40
Location: Likeminds
Andrius Arutiunian (Armenia/Lithuania) is an artist and composer working with sound, holding an BA and MA in Composition from the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague. Using modular musical scores, non-western tuning, resonance, and speculative instruments, Arutiunian is interested in how sound can be used to map out alternate modes of world ordering. Sonic vernaculars, non-western traditions of music making, and peripheral forms of knowledge are the focus of his most current work. Arutiunian is currently representing Armenia at the 59th La Biennale di Venezia with a solo show entitled “Gharīb”.
For the past few years Arutiunian has been researching the notion of gharīb - or a stranger that enters into our midst - through its sonic and political aspects. Cryptogenic in its origins, the term exists in both Arabic, Armenian, Farsi, and Turkish languages. While the word denotes a specific state of belonging, gharīb has also been associated with underground political activities, clandestinity, and music-making. In this talk, Arutiunian will discuss several examples of peripheral sonic and political knowledges that also appear in his Gharīb series of works.
