Exhibition: Mutation

Wed 8 — Sun 19 June | Dokzaal

With the festival exhibition Mutation, FIBER presents the work of a selection of artists who reflect on the (im)possibility of humankind to adapt to a planet in radical transformation. It uses the biological phenomenon of mutation - the alteration of genetic material - as a metaphorical lens to ground us into a more-than-human reality. Revealing the mutating understanding of relations between humans, nature, and technology, captured by art and design.

What can we learn from a semi-fictional story about the colonial discovery of rubber and another virus with far-reaching consequences? How do we step out of our individualistic self-image and learn about fluidity and interconnectedness between all living things? What happens to humans and their cultures when they terraform a planet's DNA?

Opening Night

Thu 16 June | Likeminds

The opening night of the 12th FIBER Festival edition further explores the theme of Mutation through a conversation - our keynote lecture - and two musical concerts by Sofie Birch and Flora Yin Wong. In times of a global pandemic, the climate emergency and many transformative challenges, is there a way to find a new way to perceive and learn from our surroundings? Can we find comfort in the healing nature of sounds? We welcome you to experience this together at Likeminds.

Lecture-performance: 18:00—19:00

Audiovisual Arts Assembly

Fri 17 June | Likeminds

A deep dive into artistic and critical making-processes for professionals and students

As a precursor for the festival conference, this one-day event at Likeminds aims to share knowledge about unique making processes behind contemporary audiovisual art, performances and visionary design projects, with the aim to build bridges between a wide selection of professional makers, thinkers, students and organisers. AAA invites you to meet the makers and explores contemporary tools and topics. Get to know new makers, gain insight into their studio and art practice. Separate form the core programme, two additional meeting rooms will be offered to conversations and presentation about new modes of internet and ecological governance.

Conference

Sat 18 + Sun 19 June | Likeminds

Meet the makers and thinkers who challenge our perception of reality

The two-day conference is the heart of the festival and offers a dynamic range of performative lectures, interviews, listening sessions, conversations and a revolving ritual installation that expand on the festival's theme of Mutation. Get to know the work of artists, designers, musicians and researchers and how they dream about, and propose adaptive futures. How to reorientate ourselves collectively, and foster new forms of kinship with more-than-human entities, towards post-human worlds?

The programme is divided over two days, with three sessions on both Saturday and Sunday. Each panel digs into a certain topic, for which we invite two speakers per block to tell you everything about their practices and research on the matter.

Club Night

Sat 18 June | Garage Noord

On Saturday 18 June FIBER will host a club night in the Amsterdam-Noord staple Garage Noord, with CORIN, Karoliina Pärnänen, Mad Miran, Meuko! Meuko!, Slimfit, Thick Owens, CCL, Zohar b2b Laksa. Overcoming all challenges of the pandemic, their resilience has allowed us to open the doors for our guests who have energy to burn at the end of the week. Join us for a mesmerising night, after which you pop outside anew in the early morning rays.

Closing Night

Sun 19 June | FIBER x murmur x Echobox Radio

Mutation: Listening In All Directions

For the closing night of FIBER Festival 2022, listening bar murmur, online radio station Echobox and FIBER join forces for an intimate evening of experimental soundwaves. You are invited to join a series of sonic explorations from musicians and sound artists whose work is informed by a diverse range of musical styles: from different territories and cultures, bringing together analogue and digital technologies, and natural and artificial sound in ever-mutating sonic landscapes. Under the title Mutation: Listening In All Directions, an evening of live music, short conversations and DJ sets unfolds, in which the act of listening is explored as vectors aiming at new horizons.
